Slice seeding is most useful when establishing a new lawn or filling in a mostly bare patch of ground. If you have a bigger area that is very bare and you want grass there, you slice seed so that it will be full of grass that season.

The slice seeding machine cuts slices into the soil, creating thin, shallow furrows. Then the machine deposits grass seed in those slices. (It’s basically a smaller-scale version of the same machine that Indiana farmers use to sow corn.) The slices in the soil give a safe place for the seeds to germinate, as they are in direct contact with the soil and birds can’t reach them.

Some customers ask about traditional aeration for new lawns, but we find that slice seeding is faster. With aeration on a new lawn, the grass eventually will fill in, but the process would take years. Traditional aeration is more suited to maintaining established lawns.
